Record-breaking performance at Grindrod’s Navitrade terminal in Richards Bay

Grindrod’s dry bulk facility in Richards Bay, Navitrade, has officially surpassed last year’s record of 2 043 200 tonnes handled year to date. We’re proud to share that the terminal has now handled an impressive 2 212 375 tonnes of coal so far this year.

This achievement builds on the momentum gained in 2024 by continuing the shift of road cargo away from the port and towards a more efficient, conveyor belt–based operation. It follows Transnet Port Terminals (TPT)  successful recommissioning of the 2.2 km conveyor directly linked to the port, which was brought back into operation last year after the fires of October 2021.

This milestone was made possible through strong collaboration TPT and our valued local partners, Eyamakhosi, whose commitment has been instrumental in growing throughput. We also extend our sincere thanks to our customers, who have played a pivotal role in supporting and enabling this growth journey.

Grindrod is also seeing a gradual increase in rail volumes, which bodes well for the long-term growth and sustainability of these volumes. Looking ahead, Navitrade intends to further increase throughput through continued investment in infrastructure, while growing Richards Bay’s capabilities as a strategic gateway port.

A sincere thank you to the management and team at TPT for your dedication and collaboration in ensuring seamless cargo handling. And to the Grindrod team — hats off to you on a truly remarkable achievement.
