A first Bhasobha Wednesday for our Group People and Culture Officer

Grindrod’s Maydon Wharf operations (multipurpose terminals) recently hosted Tony Smith, the newly appointed Group People and Culture Officer, during his first Bhasobha Wednesday on site. While safety is a priority 24/7, Wednesdays are dedicated to emphasising its importance. On these days, the teams come together for a “safety walkabout” to keep everyone focused and reminded of safety practices.

The visit formed part of his introduction to operations across the Group, with a focus on reinforcing safety culture and engaging directly with employees in their working environment.

At Maydon Wharf, teams work in a fast-paced terminal environment, managing cargo from arrival through to dispatch, with safety and coordination central to daily operations.

During the visit, Tony spent time engaging with employees across the site to understand their day-to-day experiences better.

“I’ve spent my last 16 years in a very different industry,” he said. “To see the passion, pride and enthusiasm that our people show for their jobs, despite some obvious challenges, was really heart-warming.”

Terminal Operations Manager, Mo Simjee, noted that “it reflects a real commitment from leadership to understand operations at ground level. It reinforced that our work is seen and valued.”
