Grindrod employees presented the #WeMakeItWork initiative to learners at HACT

The #WeMakeItWork initiative was designed for learners participating in the computer literacy programme sponsored by Grindrod at the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust. Additional interns and some junior HACT staff members joined the group, bringing the total number of students participating to 30.

The #WeMakeItWork initiative involved Grindrod employees from various backgrounds, businesses, and professions sharing their personal stories of overcoming struggles to enter and thrive in the workforce, in a podcast/panel discussion format. The first segment focused on specific advice for entering the job market, including tips for preparing for interviews and highlighting the soft skills and qualities that employers look for in prospective candidates. The second segment addressed the endurance and resilience required to succeed once employed. The third segment emphasised the crucial role individuals play in making opportunities work for them, rather than waiting for opportunities to be handed to them.

Finally, the last segment featured a platform for experience sharing. Trevor Sithole, a desktop technician at Grindrod, was among the Grindrod staff who shared their stories. Trevor was born and raised in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, where all the students reside, and he has studied and works in the IT field, which aligns with the target audience's interests. The panellists were supported by a master of ceremonies and an interviewer, both of whom shared their personal stories to inspire students to strive relentlessly to achieve their goals. Attendees from Grindrod included colleagues from Sturrock Grindrod Maritime, Grindrod Logistics Africa, Grindrod Terminals, United Container Depots, Grindrod Rail Consultancy Services, and Grindrod Corporate Services.
