As part of Grindrod’s Mandela month initiative, employees in Durban dedicated their time to making a meaningful difference alongside Rise Against Hunger Africa. Inspired by the spirit of Mandela Day and the call to give 67 minutes in service of others, volunteers came together for two meal packing sessions, ultimately packing an incredible 21 600 nutritious meals.
The meals will support in Rise Against Hunger Africa’s ECD Connect Programme, providing five meals a week for an entire year. Beyond addressing immediate hunger, the programme helps early childhood development centres redirect funds previously spent on meals towards improving facilities, teacher training and educational resources, creating lasting benefits for the children and their communities.
Speaking after the event, Rise Against Hunger Africa Events and Fundraising Coordinator, Kim Carrington, reflected on the impact of the day:
“I hope they take away that feel-good feeling, that they’ve made an impact, that they’ve made a difference and they really are truly changing lives and giving those children hope for a brighter future.”
The Durban event is one of several Rise Against Hunger Africa initiatives taking place across Grindrod during Mandela month. Teams in Walvis Bay and Cape Town have already participated, while colleagues in Richards Bay and Komatipoort will continue the initiative later this month.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time, enthusiasm and compassion. Together, we’re honouring Madiba’s legacy by creating meaningful change in the communities we serve.
